Campaign for a ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Super Bowl halftime show is no joke
With a worldwide audience watching and cameras incessantly flashing everywhere, the lights at University of Phoenix Stadium come on as “Weird Al” Yankovic hits those first accordion notes of “Another One Rides the Bus.”
People lose their minds and twirl their Hawaiian shirts in the air; this, after all, is the halftime show of Super Bowl XLIX – or at least, it could be.
Actually, more than 26,500 people have signed an online petition trying to make that idea a reality.
Ed Ball of Washington state started a petition on change.org asking the league to have Yankovic headline the Super Bowl halftime show.
His argument why the NFL should take this request under consideration allowing the pop-song parodist who recently scored his first No. 1 album with “Mandatory Fun,” is to the point.
“For decades Weird Al has entertained fans, young and old, with his popular clever parodies and unique sense of humor,” the petition states. “Having him headline the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show would not only be overly accepted by the millions of views, but it would remain true to the standards and quality of the show business we have come to love and respect out of this prestigious event.”
Although it seems Ball takes the request quite seriously, even he has been surprised by the amount of support his petition has received.
“20K+!!!! Holy guacamole!!! Thank you so much for the overflowing support and bringing this idea to the national spotlight,” Ball said on the petition. “I am fielding so many emails, phone calls and requests around this petition, and I am trying to respond to everyone in a timely manner.”
The NFL did not return a request for comment.
