Sparks select Nnemkadi Ogwumike with the top pick in WNBA draft
With the top overall pick in the WNBA draft the Sparks selected Nnemkadi Ogwumike on Monday.
Ogwumike, a 6-foot-2 forward from Stanford, led her team this season to a No. 1 regional seeding and a fourth straight Final Four appearance while averaging 22.5 points and 10.2 rebounds.
Ogwumike is expected to have an immediate impact on the Sparks, who finished last season with a 15-19 record and missed the playoffs for the fourth time in franchise history.
“I just want to come in and contribute,” Ogwumike told ESPN2. “I’m not looking to do too much, i’m just looking to do me.”
The last four No. 1 picks have all been named rookie of the year.
Said Ross: “I think first and foremost we’re getting a great team player...Obviously she’s a creator on the offensive end but she’s relentless on defense.”
The Sparks also have three picks in the second round and one selection in the third round.
