Big West tournament: Long Beach State routs Cal State Northridge; Cal Poly advances

Jadon Jones tallied 19 points and 11 rebounds, the first double-double for the freshman, to lift Long Beach State to an 85-63 win over Cal State Northridge in the Big West Conference tournament first round on Tuesday.

Chance Hunter had 13 points for ninth-seeded Long Beach State (6-11), which faces league champion UC Santa Barbara in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Joe Hampton added 10 points. Colin Slater had 10 points.

The Beach dismissed leading scorer junior guard Michael Carter III, who started 13 games and average more than 15 points, from the program on on Saturday.

The Matadors’ 29% shooting represented the worst mark by a Long Beach State opponent this season.

TJ Starks had 23 points for the eighth-seeded Matadors (9-13). Atin Wright added 16 points. Alex Merkviladze had 10 rebounds.

Cal Poly 87, Cal State Fullerton 82

Colby Rogers tied his career high with 21 points as Cal Poly beat Cal State Fullerton 87-82 a Big West Conference tournament first-round matchup on Tuesday night.

Alimamy Koroma had 18 points for Cal Poly (4-19), Tuukka Jaakkola and Keith Smith each scored 10 and Smith distributed six assists.

Landis Spivey had 17 points for the Titans (6-10), Tory San Antonio scored 16 points and Dante Maddox 15. Titans leading Tray Maddox Jr., struggled with a 2-for-14 shooting performance.
