UCLA falls to No. 4 in AP ranking after loss to Oregon

One loss cost previously unbeaten UCLA only two spots in the Associated Press ranking.

The Bruins fell to No. 4 on Monday after they suffered their first defeat of the season last week against Oregon before rebounding with a victory over Oregon State.

USC, which also lost to the Ducks while splitting its games with the Oregon schools, was tied with Indiana for No. 25. Oregon rose to No. 15.

UCLA (14-1 overall, 1-1 Pac-12 Conference) would still be undefeated were it not for Dillon Brooks’ last-second three-pointer that gave the Ducks an 89-87 victory.

“Our only loss is at Oregon by two points on a last-second shot,” Bruins Coach Steve Alford said with a chuckle after the game, taking stock of his team’s start that still ranks among the best in school history.

UCLA held off Oregon State, 76-63, thanks to a flurry of three-pointers after the Beavers had pulled to within one point midway through the second half.

The Bruins will play host to California (10-4, 1-1) on Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion in their conference home opener, and the Trojans (14-1, 1-1) will play host to Stanford (8-6, 0-2) the same night at the Galen Center.
