UCLA’s Eddie Vanderdoes out for season because of knee injury
UCLA defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior-cruciate ligament in his knee Saturday during a 34-16 victory over Virginia, according to a person close to the situation but not authorized to speak about it.
Vanderdoes, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound junior, went to help up nose tackle Kenny Clark after Clark caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter. Vanderdoes collapsed and limped off the field. Coach Jim Mora said Vanderdoes’ knee had “locked up on him” earlier in the game.
The loss of Vanderdoes is a severe blow to the Bruins. He and Clark have been a formidable duo up front. Virginia averaged only 2.9 yards per carry on 34 rushing attempts.
“That’s darn good defense,” Mora said.
Vanderdoes was in the middle of it. He finished with a team-high eight tackles.
Sophomores Matt Dickerson and Jacob Tuioti-Mariner will see their playing time increase in Vanderdoes’s absence.
Vanderdoes was an honorable-mention All-Pac-12 Conference selection last season. He finished eighth on the team with 50 tackles.
Defensive back Randall Goforth is expected to practice Tuesday, Mora said. He left the game in the fourth quarter with what Mora said was a “sore neck.”
