Watch Ronald Jones II conduct USC’s marching band

USC’s Ronald Jones II didn’t have much of a choice but to conquer his fear Saturday after a 38-30 victory over Arizona.

The freshman tailback was escorted to the sideline, handed a sword and was told to climb a ladder to conduct the Trojans’ marching band after he rushed for 177 yards and a touchdown, a new freshman single-game rushing record at USC.

It was apparent when Jones slowly climbed a few steps that he used extra caution.

After the celebration he admitted that he’s afraid of heights.

“That was a little too much, I wanted to stay down,” Jones said, smiling. “But I guess it’s tradition, so you got to do it. I just didn’t want to fall off and be the first Trojan to fall off.”

To make matters worse, Jones said, “The sword was heavy too.”

Jones has rushed for a team-best 710 yards and six touchdowns in 89 carries this season.

Against Arizona he also caught a five-yard pass for his first receiving touchdown.

Despite his angst, Jones said that he came to USC from his native Texas “to follow the tradition” and that it was “great” to be recognized after the game.
