Baseball: Loyola wins Mission League championship

Facing a must-win situation in its final Mission League game of the season, Loyola turned to ace pitcher Nathan Hadley, who threw six shutout innings before settling for a five-hitter and helping the Cubs defeat Alemany, 7-2, on Friday.

Coupled with Harvard-Westlake’s 9-3 loss to Chaminade, Loyola (20-5-1, 9-2-1) clinched the league championship and a likely top four seeding in the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Quinn Brodey had a home run and Eric Del Prado contributed three RBIs. Hadley, a UCLA signee, struck out eight and walked four.

In Chaminade’s victory, Dylan Suppan threw 5 2/3 innings and Blake Rutherford hit a two-run home run. Christian Vitale added two hits. Crespi defeated St. Francis, 4-2. Nate Buckner allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Culver City, 3-1, in eight innings on a two-run home run by Tristan Klier.

Alhambra improved to 19-3 overall and 13-0 in Almont League with a 3-0 win over San Gabriel. James Giambalvo threw 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing three hits while striking out eight. Jose Loera had two hits.

In the Foothill League, Jason Drees of West Ranch kept alive his 18-game hitting streak, delivering the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 win over Saugus. Hart moved into first place by itself with a 7-3 win over Golden Valley. Nick Valaika had a home run. Paul Richan won his seventh game.

Valencia defeated Canyon Country Canyon, 9-2. Keston Hiura hit his fifth home run in the last three games and now has 12 on the season. Devon Davis had a two-run double and an RBI double. Anthony Lepre hit a two-run home run.

Cypress moved closer to an Empire League title with a 6-3 win over Valencia. Brandon Alamo and Jarren Duran each had two hits.

In the Trinity League, Mater Dei (12-12, 6-7) won its fourth consecutive game, a 5-0 victory over Servite. Freshman Nick Pratto struck out nine and threw a two-hitter. Jonathan Schiffer and Bryan Call each had two RBIs.

Orange Lutheran, after a 4-9 start, clinched a playoff berth with a 4-1 win over St. John Bosco. Tristan Hanoian, Josh Morgan and Leo Hernandez each had two hits. Garett King got the win. Santa Margarita knocked off first-place JSerra, 5-4. Griffin Canning broke the 4-4 tie with an RBI single in the seventh. Brady Shockey had three hits for JSerra.

In the Sunset League, No. 1 Fountain Valley defeated Marina, 8-1. Scott Schultz improved to 12-0, allowing one unearned run in six innings. Dillon Persinger had two hits and two RBIs. Justin Cobb added two hits and three RBIs. Huntington Beach defeated Edison, 6-0. Noah Davis allowed two hits in six shutout innings. Jarrett Anton and Tyler Murray each had two hits.

In the Marmonte League, Agoura stayed unbeaten in league with a 3-2 win over Moorpark. Dylan Bahr had two hits and two RBIs. Thousand Oaks defeated Simi Valley, 9-0. Jackson Simonsgaard allowed one hit in 6 1/3 innings while striking out nine. Jeff Wilson was four for four. John Glenn and Erik Treadaway had three hits apiece.

Newbury Park defeated Royal, 2-1. Chris Clarke struck out seven. Westlake defeated Calabasas, 7-1, with a six-run eighth inning. Luke Dykstra had a home run.

In the Sierra League, Chino Hills defeated Claremont, 12-2. Jake Taylor had two hits and two RBIs. South Hills defeated Damien, 7-5, in eight innings.

In the Sea View League, Dana Hills (23-6, 10-2) stayed in first place with a 4-1 win over San Clemente. Louis Raymond struck out two, walked none and allowed four hits. Reid Lundeen had two hits and scored three runs. Aliso Niguel defeated San Juan Hills, 8-2.

In the Century League, Foothill moved into first place after a 7-6, nine-inning win over Anaheim Canyon. Randell Kanemaru had the walk-off single. Foothill rallied from a 6-0 deficit with six runs in the fifth. Trent Etchandy threw three shutout innings in relief.

Esperanza pulled out a 4-3, 11-inning win over Villa Park. Tyler Domene threw 5 2/3 innings shutout relief. The winning run came home on a wild pitch.

In the South Coast League, Trabuco Hills defeated Capistrano Valley, 8-1

In the San Gabriel Valley League, Downey defeated Paramount, 11-4, to improve to 7-1 in league and clinch at least a share of the title. Warren won its 10th game in a row with a 13-0 win over Lynwood. Bryan Duenas struck out seven in five innings. Alan Trejo was four for four with three RBIs.

In the Pacific League, Crescenta Valley defeated Muir, 8-0. Jimmy Smiley and Joe Torres combined to allow two hits and strike out 12. Hoover defeated Burbank, 7-4. Fidel Hernandez had a home run and three RBIs. Pierce Velazquez added three hits. Burroughs defeated Arcadia, 1-0.

In the Tri-Valley League, Oaks Christian defeated Grace Brethren, 12-1. Michael Kress went four for five with two doubles.

In the Del Rey League, Bishop Amat defeated La Salle, 4-0. Andrew Eppenbach threw five shutout innings. Scott Hurst went three for three with a double and triple. Bishop Montgomery defeated Gardena Serra, 5-4, in nine innings.

In the Channel League, Dalton Schneider’s two-out double in the eighth drove in the winning run and gave Santa Barbara a 5-4 win over Buena. Ian True had two singles and two RBIs for Santa Barbara.

In the Delphic League, Campbell Hall defeated Windward, 7-6. Ethan Baer had the walk-off hit with two outs. Sloan Fischer went two for four with an RBI.

El Segundo defeaed North Torrance, 12-4. Nick Martinez had a two-run single. Jake Palmer had two hits.

Beckman defeated Woodbridge, 4-1. Dallas Dey had two hits.
