Beach cruiser event in H.B. recalls ‘golden age of surfing’
Hundreds of beach cruisers from 1972 and earlier parked along Main Street and the pier in Huntington Beach over the weekend, evoking the car and surfing scene of decades ago.
The annual Huntington Beach Cruiser Meet welcomed 30,000 visitors, who came out Saturday and Sunday to view more than 500 vehicles, including 113 woodies, said one of the organizers, Tom Long.
He noted that a dozen vintage trailers, including Shastas, Airstreams and a Holiday Rambler, added to the old-time feel.
“This is our 16th year, and it was the biggest and best yet, and the weather was fantastic,” Long said.
He said the event focuses on up-close viewing of classic vehicles, but “we actually have a small amount of selling, and the Longboard Collector Club sells, buys and barters.”
Long said the event recalls the “golden age of surfing.”
“We have a little term: If you hauled your board, your buddies or your babe in it, it’s a beach cruiser,” Long said.
