You know that leftover foreign money you came home with? You can get a gift card for it

What do you do with the coins and notes you bring home in foreign currencies? You can change it back at a currency exchange, but Leftovercash has a better idea.

The company‘s kiosk at the South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach will take your Canadian dollars, British pounds, euros, Swiss francs and Japanese yen. It takes coins and bills, and calculates the exchange rate too.

You can choose to take your converted cash in the form of a gift card to Lowe’s, Staples, Shutterfly, Laemmle Theatres or other companies. Or you can donate the money to pre-selected charities such as American Forests and the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Greater L.A.

Leftovercash charges $3.99 for each transaction, even if you put in all five currencies.

So far, Redondo Beach is the only kiosk location (it’s on the third floor of the galleria near the movie theaters).

Those who want to change their currency for cash can do so at any foreign currency exchange, but remember coins are rarely accepted.

Travelex, for example, accepts foreign currency notes by mail. They’ll convert them and send you a check within five days -- minus a $5 processing fee. Or you may visit one of their 200 sites around the country; there are several in the Los Angeles area.
