Ski season kickoff: Plenty of thrills in this Warren Miller snow-sport film

If you’re thinking about skiing and snowboarding this season, “Chasing Shadows” will take you to extremes -- and beyond.

The Warren Miller Entertainment film is the 66th movie in the Miller tradition. As part of a national tour that started in October, the film is set to come to Southern California this week, a signal that ski season really has started.

The “chasing” in the movie may refer to pursuing storms on high-adrenaline mountain peaks in places such as the French Alps, Alaska’s Chugash, the Andes in Chile and the Himalayas.

Theskidiva.com website reviewed the film and praised scenes such as mono skiers gathering at Monopolooza in Jackson Hole, Wyo., images of “the U.S. Ski Team killing the moguls in Deer Valley,” and segments on skiers Lexi DuPont, Amie Engerbretson and McKenna Peterson in Valdez, Alaska.

The film is scheduled to screen Saturday at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s site in La Jolla; Sunday at the Carlsbad Village Theatre in Carlsbad, Dec. 9 at the Regency Bruin Theatre in L.A. and Dec. 10 at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.

Tickets cost $20 each and can be ordered online.

Though most people won’t notice or care, this is a Miller film in name only. The movie has no connection to the pioneer ski-movie maker, now 91, who began his career in 1949.

Miller sold the company in 1988, and a 2011 arbitration with Warren Miller Entertainment barred him from using his name or voice to make ski movies, ESPN reported at the time.
