Bon Appétit to spice up culinary excursions for Princess Cruises

Taste your way around the world with Princess Cruises on a new culinary shore excursion program in collaboration with Bon Appétit, publisher of one of the world’s top food magazines.

Passengers will have an opportunity to go on a restaurant walking tour in Juneau, Alaska; search for the perfect paella in Valencia, Spain; and shop for seafood at Tokyo’s Tsukiji food market. Thirty excursions are scheduled, beginning this year.

The program’s tours are being developed with the food magazine, which will introduce participants to local ingredients and cooking styles, as well as demonstrations and tastings from local chefs and personalities.

Here is a sampling of tours:

—Taste of the North: Learn about Norwegian regional favorites such as moose steak in this excursion in Kristiansand, Norway.

—Scones from Scratch: Learn to prepare this traditional Irish dish with Catherine Fulivio, chef and proprietor of Ballyknocken Cookery School, House and Restaurant outside Dublin, Ireland.

—Classic Copenhagen: Visit Denmark’s well known Ferry Café, then tour Danish palaces and castles, sail aboard a modern canal boat and visit Tivoli Gardens.

—Pacific Northwest Pairings: While in Astoria, Ore., sip local wines, meet chef Chris Holen at the restaurant Baked Alaska and learn how to bring creativity to seafood dishes.

--From Mate to Malbec: Visit Argentina’s urban hub, Buenos Aires, and learn how to make empanadas and taste classic dishes such as grilled provoleta cheese, sliced chorizo and steak accompanied by a glass of local Malbec wine.

—Juneau Foodie Walking Tour: Take a stroll through downtown Juneau, Alaska, tasting crab bisque, fish tacos, smoked pork and local beer and wine.

—The Perfect Paella: Soak in the sights of Valencia, Spain, followed by a meal featuring one of the city’s iconic dishes: paella. Guided by a local chef, guests will study the preparation that brings this saffron-seasoned rice dish to plate.

—Roots of Russia: While visiting St. Petersburg, Russia, take a lesson in making meat pies at a local restaurant. Participants will pair their creations with 80-proof vodka.
