More snow for Mammoth as weekend nears
“The mountains are calling,” says the sign welcoming visitors to Mammoth, featuring the famous John Muir quotation. But with all the snow, the white letters were barely legible late this week.
Mammoth Lakes continues to get pounded by El Niño blasts, the latest coming Thursday with nearly 20 inches of fresh snow – and counting. The season total is pushing toward 260 inches, a healthy total for this time of year, though still less than half the 669 record total set five years ago. But there’s lot of time left.
“Big, heavy wet stuff,” Mammoth Lakes resident Cynthia Hayes said of Thursday morning’s snowfall. By afternoon, she said, the sun was out but winds were high.
The depth at Main Lodge, at 8,900-foot elevation, was topping 105. Higher up, at 11,053 feet, the summit base was topping 165 inches.
Friday’s forecast called for clouds and temperatures in the 30s, with partly cloudy skies on Saturday, with a high of 44.
Among the activities this weekend: Woolly’s birthday party and parade at the Village, and the full moon cross-country or snowshoe tour at Tamarack Lodge.
