Cheap (but creative) eats at Honolulu food trucks and tents

Tired of $20 burgers on Waikiki Beach? Cheaper and certainly more varied eats await at another waterfront location just a couple of miles away.

Makers & Tasters, a collection of food trucks and tents, is now open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday.

Located along Kewalo Basin at 1011 Ala Moana Blvd., in Honolulu, Makers & Tasters attracts between eight and 10 vendors each day. Some of the regulars include:

Aloha Plate, winner of Food Network’s Great Food Truck Race 

La Roux Hawaii, serving New Orleans cuisine.

Tea On Fleek, which sells iced teas infused with fresh fruit.

There's also a full bar on site.

Street Grindz, the company behind the pop-up food site, already sponsors Eat The Street, a similar event held the last Friday of every month. Marketer Christine Gomez told me the expansion to six days a week helps businesses grow.

"It gives local small businesses an opportunity to showcase their food and [for customers to] find them regularly," she said.

A schedule of vendors is updated daily.
