Las Vegas: Deals to love on Valentine’s weekend

Couples and singles are sure to find romance in the air in Sin City on Valentine’s weekend kicking off on Feb. 14, a Friday.

Cupid may be loading his arrows during a “Date-A-Thon” at The D, downtown Las Vegas’ newest hotel-casino. From 6-9 p.m. on Feb. 14, the resort hopes to break the record for the world’s largest speed dating event. Each participant will “date” 24 people for three minutes apiece in hopes of finding a mate. The event is free, but pre-registration is required.

Just one block away, a real blast is promised at the Mob Museum, which will celebrate its second anniversary by remembering the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of 1929. That’s when gangsters dressed as Chicago cops gunned down seven members of a competing mob, thereby giving Al Capone control of organized crime in the city. Two of the Thompson machine guns used in the massacre will be displayed Feb. 14 and 15. Nevada residents get in free on Valentine’s Day, while out-of-towners can purchase two tickets for the price of one.

A variety of restaurants along the Strip will be offering romantic dinners for two. For example, Trevi Italian Restaurant in the Forum Shops at Caesars will have a “That’s Amore” dinner for $70 a couple. Start with a choice of salads before choosing from three special pasta entrees. For dessert, lovebirds will enjoy “spaghetti ice,” a gelato dish cleverly prepared to look like a plate of spaghetti. On that Friday only, diners can also try the Love Potion No. 9 cocktail. It’s made with Citron vodka, pomegranate juice, lemon juice, raspberry syrup and sweet and sour mix.

Two of the greatest lovers from the silver screen – Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) – will reunite during screenings of “Casablanca” on Saturday, Feb. 15 at at 2 and 7:30 p.m. The Las Vegas Philharmonic will be performing the score during the event at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.
