Preview: Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree at Disney California Adventure

Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree promises to be the dizziest and noisiest of the new rides coming to Cars Land in 2012 at Disney California Adventure.

The racket begins before you even board the spinning tractor and cart ride: A play area near the main entrance will feature an interactive junkyard of bangable hubcaps and honkable horns.

Visitors enter the ride via a queue lined with a ramshackle fence made from old gasoline pumps, toppling barrels, balding tires and junk-trimmed trees.

Tow Mater, the rusty good ol’ boy tow truck from the animated Disney/Pixar “Cars” movies, serves as the “Hee Haw”-esque disc jockey for the whipsaw C-ticket who instructs riders to “whip to the left and whip to right.”

Riders sit in a cart towed by a tractor that spins through Mater’s junkyard. It blends a traditional teacup ride and classic whip ride with cars transferring from one spinning turntable to the next along a circuitous route.

According to Disney storyboards, riders will encounter a magnetized crane, a tunnel of junked automobiles, a battery sparker, an old tire arch, a “car-liope” musical player, Bessie the combine and Mama tractor.

Cars Land, the 12-acre themed land under construction at California Adventure, will feature three new rides set amid a faithful re-creation of the isolated red rock desert town populated by Lightning McQueen and other vehicles in “Cars.”
