Italy: Do-it-yourself bicycle tour highlights history of Sicily
Pure Adventures is offering a self-guided bicycle tour of western Sicily, a patchwork of Greek, Phoenician, Roman and Arab influences.
The seven-night tour, which begins and ends in Palermo, is through mostly rolling countryside and seaside.
Highlights include the medieval hilltop town of Erice; Segesta and its Doric temple; the fishing village of Scopello; and the Arab Norman town of Monreale.
Dates: Available through November, but best time to travel is now through July 15 and Sept. 1 to Nov. 15.
Price: From about $1,250. Includes seven nights’ lodging, seven breakfasts, four dinners, transfers from Palermo or Tripani airport to Erice, telephone and technical support and road book with route maps. Bike and gear not included but available for rental.
