SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Border Field State Park Here, at the south end of San Diego County's coast, the Tijuana River meets the sea and California humbly begins. Hotel del Coronado The red-roofed hotel, which dates to the 19th century, stands a few miles from downtown San Diego. Old Point Loma Lighthouse The lighthouse, at Cabrillo National Monument, has been guiding mariners into San Diego's harbor since 1855. | CENTRAL CALIFORNIA Santa Barbara The city's attractions include its beaches, the nightlife on State Street and the estates on its hillsides. El Capitan State Beach The beach features about 140 campsites and a 3-mile hiking or biking trail to Refugio State Beach. Avila Beach Avila Beach is a small town in San Luis Obispo County with a pier and a Friday fish and farmers market. | NORTHERN CALIFORNIA Monterey Once the capital of California, Monterey lately gets more attention for its extensive aquarium. Santa Cruz Pacific Avenue, the main commercial drag of Santa Cruz, leads directly the beach and municipal wharf. Half Moon Bay Half Moon Bay, known for big waves, is a popular weekend destination for Bay Area residents. |
OREGON Harris Beach State Park This park, just north of Brookings, Ore., is full of seastacks and tide pools, with cabins, yurts and campsites. Gold Beach The roadside scenery in Gold Beach, Ore., includes the cool mural work on Tsunami Willie's. | WASHINGTON Seaview The Depot restaurant, which sits in Seaview, offers fancy dinners (wild boar Florentine, Peruvian mango sea scallops). Kalaloch Beneath Kalaloch Lodge, the beach is thickly strewn with mega-driftwood, and you're allowed to make little campfires. |
