Even, new hotel brand, is for healthful eaters and fitness buffs

America, here’s a new hotel that wants to help you make healthy choices. Even Hotels, created specifically for “wellness-minded travelers,” is opening two locations on the East Coast this month and plans three more by the end of 2015.

The brand is being launched by giant InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), which operates InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Hotel Indigo and other brands.

Even Hotels hews to four core concepts: “Eat well, rest easy, keep active, accomplish more.” What does that mean? Instead of hitting the vending machine at 2 a.m., you can go to the fresh-food bar 24/7. Instead of binge-watching “Game of Thrones,” you can work out in your room’s fitness zone with cork flooring or go to the “athletic studio” off the lobby and take a class. Nice extras include mini-smoothies, exercise advice/options and Wi-Fi at no extra charge.

Even is hoping to woo business-leisure travelers (the line has blurred in the Internet age) from Courtyard by Marriott, Hyatt Place and Aloft brands with the idea that they care about their guests’ well-being.

You won’t find a sit-down restaurant in these hotels. Sites will have a grab-and-go food service called Kale & Cork, where you can get a power granola breakfast with goji berries, dried fruit and chia seeds for $6.50 and a kale and four cheese flatbread dinner for $11.98. You can sip wine, too, or try an organic cocktail.

“It’s a select service model,” a spokeswoman said. “It’s a kind of upscale Panera meets Starbucks meets a nice wine bar.”

The hotel brand worked with an advisory group behind the Founding Farmers restaurant group based in Washington, D.C., to develop and test recipes.

Even Hotels properties open this month in Norwalk, Conn., and Rockville, Md., outside Washington. Room rates vary by site. I found prices starting at $181 a night with breakfast at the Rockville hotel for mid-July.

Two newly built hotels are planned for Manhattan, one near Times Square and the other near the U.N. building on the East Side, and a third one will open in Brooklyn. Each hotel will have 150 to 230 rooms.
