American Airlines cancels 595 more flights
American Airlines has canceled 595 more flights, bringing this week’s total to nearly 3,100 as inspections continue on the wiring of its MD-80 jets.
Fort Worth-based American today announced the latest cancellations and said that it expected to operate about half of its MD-80 schedule through much of the day.
CEO Gerard Arpey said this week’s flight cancellations will cost American Airlines tens of millions of dollars but the carrier can withstand the losses.
Meanwhile, the fourth airline in a month filed for bankruptcy protection.
Frontier Airlines Holdings Inc., the discount carrier that serves 70 destinations from Denver, said the move was triggered by a credit-card processor’s decision to withhold proceeds from ticket sales. Denver-based Frontier did not name the company. Frontier pledged to continue flying and keep paying workers while it seeks additional financing.
“We filed for very different reasons than those of other recent carriers,” Frontier Chief Executive Officer Sean Menke said. “We believe that we currently have adequate cash on hand to meet our operating needs while we take steps to further strengthen our company.”
