A sale on airline fees? American discounts preferred seat charge

For a limited time, American Airlines will take 25% off the cost of choosing to fly in a preferred seat (just the seat fee, not off the cost of the ticket). The sale price of preferred seats -- usually aisle and window seats at the front of the plane -- start at $3 per flight for a limited time.

The deal: The savings sound small on this deal, but they can add up. American doesn’t divulge the top price for preferred seats on its website; it just says the cost varies by itinerary. Airfarewatchdog says the valued seats range from $4 to $59 a flight without the sale.

To be clear, active U.S. military members (and family members traveling with them) as well as premium and full-fare customers may still select these seats for free. The rest of us get to choose to pay $4 and up for the spots usually far up in the main cabin. These sale seats apply to flights on American as well as American Eagle and AmericanConnection, a regional carrier in Chicago.

When: The 25% discount is good until 9:59 p.m. Pacific time Sunday. Reserving preferred seats is always subject to availability.

Details: Passengers may book a preferred seat, either when they make a reservation or when they check in, at www.aa.com, American Airline’s mobile site, its self-service check-in machines or using the airline’s reservations agents. Preferred seats also are being sold on Priceline for the first time.
