Times staff photos, August 2017: Harvey, eclipse, protests and football returns to SoCal

Here’s a look back at Los Angeles Times staff photography for August 2017. We begin in Texas, where Hurricane Harvey unleashed its wrath and is now being estimated as the second-costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, trailing only Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Millions watched as the moon’s shadow blotted out the sun in a grand celestial show that had not been visible across America in nearly a century.

In sports, the U.S. Open of Surfing did not disappoint, and the Dodgers continued their march to the playoffs. We add scenes from the AVP Manhattan Beach Open and preseason football back in the Southland.

Sprinkle in scenics, protests, and the reopening of Angels Flight, and you have our visual report for August 2017. Enjoy
