Tumblr, the popular blogging social network, now has more than 168 million monthly worldwide users and has also broken into the list of top 10 U.S. websites by traffic, the company said Monday.

Twenty-six-year-old CEO David Karp announced the news this morning in a blog post, later adding, to be exact, that Tumblr is No. 9 on the list of top U.S. sites.

The New York-based company launched in 2007 but has taken off over the last few years. Tumblr is popular among teens and young adults, who use it to post pictures, blogs and, most notably, GIFs, which are computer files that can cycle through a series of pictures and often look like short video clips.

“It is truly a privilege to build products for you, and we are humbled every day by all the amazing ways you use them,” Karp said in the post.

Karp linked to Tumblr’s traffic stats on the website Quantcast, which measures traffic. According to the page, Tumblr gets nearly 61.33 million monthly visitors in the U.S., which puts it ahead of the Huffington Post.

Quantcast keeps a list of the top U.S. sites here, but it appears to have outdated information, making it unclear what other sites are in the top 10.

Regardless, Tumblr’s feat is quite the accomplishment and leaves it in a tussle with Pinterest to be the third-most frequented social network, behind Facebook and Twitter.
