Infographic: Gaza tunnels: An underground war

Three weeks ago Israel launched a military offensive against the Hamas-run Gaza Strip to curb rocket fire into Israel. Since then the military shifted its focus to a network of underground tunnels it says run under the border and threaten locations inside Israel. The border was breached several times in recent weeks by tunnel-borne armed infiltrators. Israel’s military says it has detected and demolished dozens of tunnels and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says operations will continue until the tunnel threat is removed.

About 1,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since fighting began July 8 and more than 8,000 injured, Palestinian medical officials report.

Israel’s military says the average tunnel is 1.25 miles long and 66 to 98 feet deep. See diagrams.
