The tallest offshore platform was ordered by Shell.
Fontana-based Kaiser Steel and Gulf Marine Fabricators were awarded the $200-million contract and have formed a company, called Bullwinkle Constructors, to build the offshore platform. It will be used to develop Shell Oil’s Green Canyon oil and natural gas field in the Gulf of Mexico. The platform will weigh 78,000 tons and be 1,615 feet tall--higher than the world’s tallest building, the 1,454-foot Sears Tower in Chicago.
