Vons Markets has agreed to pay a $100,000 fine to settle a lawsuit charging that electronic scanners misread prices at one of its Bakersfield stores. The supermarket chain was sued by the Kern County district attorney’s office after an investigation by the Department of Weights and Measures that stemmed partly from consumer complaints. Investigators had found that scanner errors at the store were three times more likely to favor Vons than the customer, Deputy Dist. Atty. William Slocumb said. Vons also agreed to be more careful to make certain that scanner prices are the same as the prices printed on the items being sold, Slocumb said.
