VENICE
Jeff Joyce taps into the Romantic tradition of painting at the gray-green end of the spectrum. Reducing his palette to near-monochrome, he sets forth shadowy archetypal landscapes. You know the kind: a vanishing road, a bridge across a horizon, sharp peaks rising from a plain--all emerging from a dark haze. You know the titles of these artworks, too: “Epoch,” “Melancholia,” “Reincarnation,” “Nocturne,” “Nirvana.”
Except for a vertical diptych that floats a light sphere above a gateway and a triptych combining three landscapes, these paintings are so familiar that they seem like memories sent into the present on faded post cards. That doesn’t leave the viewer much to discover except quite richly painted surfaces and an atmosphere that often has the authentic resonance of passion remembered.
