An improved performance by its furniture stores helped RB Industries of Los Angeles to post a sharp increase in first-quarter earnings. Sales also were higher, with fewer stores in operation. For the three months ended Sept. 30, net income included an extraordinary credit from the firm’s use of an income-tax-loss carryforward that amounted to 11 cents a share.
