GABRIEL WINS 2 TOP VIDEO AWARDS

Peter Gabriel, shut out in the Grammy Awards on Tuesday, was the big winner in the fifth annual American Video Awards ceremony held Thursday at the Scottish Rite Auditorium. Gabriel was on hand to accept awards for best pop video and best male performance for his “Sledgehammer” video, and was also inducted into the National Academy of Video Arts and Sciences’ hall of fame. “Sledgehammer” was also singled out for best direction (Stephen Johnson) and for its clay animation and stop-action special effects.

Other winners included Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” (best female performance), the Bangles’ “Walk Like an Egyptian” (best group performance), David Lee Roth’s “Yankee Rose” (best stage performance), Prince and the Revolution’s “Kiss” (best urban contemporary video) and Dwight Yoakam’s “Honky Tonk Man” (best country video).

The ceremony, which was taped as a syndicated television special for distribution in May, featured live performances by the Bangles and Wang Chung and was co-hosted by Shari Belafonte Harper and Graham Nash, with Casey Kasem serving as emcee.
