Henley Group bought a 5.03% stake in Santa Fe.
In a 10-K statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the La Jolla-based company said it bought 7.9 million shares in Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corp. stock last year. The company said speculation that Henley might boost its holdings pushed SFSP stock up 1 7/8 to 38 in New York Stock Exchange trading Monday. Henley closed off 5/8 at 26 1/8. Henley and SFSP both issued statements saying the Henley shares were an investment and nothing more. Henley paid $261 million for the shares in 1986 and has acquired no additional shares so far this year.
