HUEY THE UNTIMID

Robert Hilburn may be right about Elvis, Dylan, the Beatles, the Doors and others spoiling the rock fans of the 1960s with their great music, but I don’t think it’s quite fair for him to dub some of today’s artists such as Huey Lewis as having “artistic timidity” (“ ‘Tree’ Tops Midyear Album List,” by Robert Hilburn, June 28).

Anyone with such diverse hits as “The Power of Love,” “Bad Is Bad” and “Stuck With You” doesn’t deserve to be accused of “playing it safe.”

Huey Lewis & the News may not get into politics and such, but they are musicians of the highest caliber. Sure, they’re mainstream, but only because their diversity affords them a greater spectrum of accessibility to the public. I don’t equate this accessibility to “artistic timidity” at all.
