Union Carbide’s income grew 76% to $74 million for the third quarter, compared to the year-ago quarter. Net income in the 1986 quarter included a one-time net gain of $252 million, primarily from the sale of its home and automotive products business. The Danbury, Conn., firm’s operating profit in the 1987 third quarter increased 22% to $229 million, which it attributed to particularly strong performance by chemicals and plastics. Sales increased 11% to $1.73 billion.
