Cahuenga Treaty Anniversary
The Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department will host a reception at 2 p.m. on Jan. 24 celebrating the 140th anniversary of the Cahuenga Treaty by which California became a part of the United States.
The free celebration at Campo de Cahuenga, 3919 Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood, will feature live music, traditional Indian dancing and comments by members of the Campo de Cahuenga Memorial Assn.
In the 1840s a continuous battle was waged between the United States and Mexico over territory that included California. In January, 1847, Mexican Gen. Andres Pico and Col. John C. Fremont of the California Volunteers Battalions signed an armistice at the North Hollywood site. Along with California, territory acquired by Washington under the treaty included Nevada, Utah, Arizona and parts of New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming.
