Greenpeace Says Soviets Offer to Send Icebreaker
WASHINGTON — The Soviet Union has offered to break a path to the stranded whales in Alaska with an icebreaking ship next week if current rescue efforts do not succeed, the environmental group Greenpeace reported Friday.
The ship, the Admiral Makarov, is 300 miles north of Point Barrow, said Campbell Plowder of Greenpeace, quoting from a message received from the Soviet State Committee on Hydrometeorology.
The offer was made in the event that the three whales are still trapped by the ice next Wednesday after the Soviet ship completes its missions of establishing a research station on the ice and rescuing an ice-trapped Soviet ship.
Plowder said he had asked Monday, through scientific contacts in the Soviet Union, if any Soviet icebreaker was in a position to help.
