USAir Group announced that it intends to merge Piedmont Airlines into USAir on Aug. 5 and that the combined company will operate under the USAir name. USAir, based in Arlington, Va., bought Piedmont in 1987 for $1.59 billion but has operated it as a separate airline. Piedmont’s corporate headquarters was in Winston-Salem, N.C. Both airlines have had coast-to-coast flights, but Piedmont’s route network is predominantly in the southeastern United States. USAir also bought Pacific Southwest Airlines in 1987, giving it a strong Pacific Coast route system to go with its previous concentration on the Northeast.
