J. C. Penney Co.: The department store and catalogue retailer’s third-quarter net income jumped 31% from a year ago to a record $209 million. Revenue totaled $4.14 billion, up 11%. The Dallas firm attributed the results in part to higher sales volume. Income taxes were also reduced by $13 million.
