Friends of the Store

Landmark preservationists didn’t squawk when the store became part of the I. Magnin family. But now that the name, Bullocks Wilshire, is about to disappear from the landscape of Southern California they are beginning to squeal, ever so slightly. On Feb. 1 all seven Bullocks Wilshire stores will become I. Magnin stores. Store executives swear the merchandise and even the flagship building’s appearance will not change. But at this eleventh hour, a concerned, anonymous group, Friends of Bullocks Wilshire, is passing out leaflets, protesting the I. Magnin-ification of the classic, blue Bullocks Wilshire building on Wilshire Boulevard. (The group is only a friend to the landmark store, the other six Bullocks Wilshire stores are not mentioned in their petition.) As of midweek the leaflets--which encourage customers to contact store executives--have elicited no calls, executives say.

A Posthaste Change

Maybe you didn’t notice Markie Post’s new hairstyle on NBC’s “Night Court,” but Morgan Fairchild’s manager did. Post’s short, soft-edged look was shaped by Cristophe, the Beverly Hills stylist, who tells Listen that he got his next celebrity assignment--a Morgan Fairchild remake--after her manager noticed the change and suggested one for Fairchild. Cristophe restyled Fairchild’s longer, lioness look into a shoulder-length cut with soft layers.

New Face of J.C. Penney

The times are changing. At the cosmetic counters of J.C. Penney stores they are selling $9 lip pencils and $55 night treatment gels from a European cosmetic and skin care company, Fernand Aubry. The high-ticket line comes with the usual entourage of makeup artists associated with pricey cosmetics. They were sent by the Paris-based cosmetics company and are in select L.A.-area stores today through Jan. 20 to supervise the free makeovers.

“This is one of our most exclusive products lines,” said Rita Mincavage, merchandise and publicity director for the Los Angeles-area J.C. Penney stores. “We think of it as something that would appeal to, say, a Lancome customer.”

Lift Ticket to the Stars

The fabulous folks did not do the islands this year over the holidays. St. Barts was barren, everyone had gone to the Eastern slopes. Jeff Wilk owner of the Beverly Hills ski shop, Vail West, found Aspen, Vail and all slopes in between aglitter with stars. Pair skiing were, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver and Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman . Also spotted were Harry Hamlin , Cybill Shepherd, and Dustin Hoffman.
