Trevor Norris’ metal panel paintings are part city, part colorful abstraction--all set to a wailing boogie-woogie beat. No longer playfully folded, the metal panels are now mounted on raised wooden platforms that suggest girders or storage pallets mounted on the wall. Surfaces are thick with flashy color in shiny automotive enamel paint. The imagery looks like an aerial view of a thriving metropolis overrun by vibrantly colored slinkys and accordion snakes. Sometimes the city disappears entirely, replaced by pure pattern that suggests mosaic tile. The incredible energy never tears itself apart; it is held in check by an underlying exchange of negative and positive space that feels like an up-to-date Mondrian. (Jan Baum Gallery, 170 S. La Brea Ave., to March 31.)
