Back-Seat Driver: Former President Gerald Ford, a golfer well known for beaning spectators, practiced his swing Tuesday in Juneau, Alaska, on a visit with former British Prime Minister Leonard Callaghan. “Stand back, everybody,” Callaghan joked from behind. Ford looked out at the driving range. “You’re safer behind than out there,” he said.

* Bush’s League: President George Bush, receiving an award at a black-tie dinner in Washington, D.C., Tuesday night, called on Congress to not “leave our tree planting initiative out on a limb.” A slide show at the dinner showed him engaged in various outdoor sports. Said Bush: “I may go to work early, sometimes go home late at night, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to let anybody keep me from the great outdoors.”

* And Don’t Forget the Interest: Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) has asked for a refund of a $25 water-service deposit he made in 1938 for a piece of property he once owned in Lexington, S.C. He sold the land last year. Thurmond mailed back the original receipt for the deposit. Lexington Mayor Eli Mack said Tuesday: “How can anyone save a receipt for 52 years?” A Thurmond spokeswoman said the senator, whose net worth is more than $2 million, “needs money like anyone else.” Just one problem. Mack said water deposits are not refundable.

* Trump Change: A luncheonette owner in Elizabeth, N.J., who heard of Donald Trump’s financial difficulties, is asking customers to donate their spare change for the billionaire developer. Ed Mancini, owner of Eats, put a jar labeled “Donald Trump Fund” next to his cash register Sunday. “I know it sounds stupid. But he’s a good man and we want to support him,” he said. About $10 had been raised in three days.
