P.M. BRIEFING : Midway Airlines to Lay Off 500
CHICAGO — In another sign of hard times in the nation’s airline industry, Midway Airlines said today it is cutting its staff by 10%, putting about 500 people out of work, and cutting service on some routes.
“These actions are necessitated by escalating fuel costs brought on by the Persian Gulf crisis,” Midway Chairman David Hinson said.
All flights to Savannah, Ga., will be suspended from Nov. 1, and Midway will also withdraw from service eight of its least fuel-efficient aircraft.
Midway employs about 5,700 people.
