Unocal Plans 100 Layoffs in Brea: The Los Angeles energy company said the layoffs next month are part of an effort to cut research costs in its science and technology division. The cuts amount to 13% of the 780 employees at the Fred L. Hartley Research Center. Unocal said employees will receive one week’s severance pay for each year of employment up to 52 weeks. It said the move will result in pretax savings of $15 million to $20 million a year.
