United Way Lowers Its Goal to $88 Million

The United Way of Greater Los Angeles significantly lowered its fund-raising sights for its 1991-92 fiscal year, announcing a goal Wednesday of only $88 million after falling far short of last year’s effort to raise $102 million. Moreover, the charity is broadening its collection efforts this year to include smaller companies and minority-owned businesses.

This year’s goal of raising $88 million--the same amount raised last year--was settled on with the advice of economists and business leaders, United Way marketing Vice President Gillian Nash said. “They said it was important to establish a realistic goal,” Nash said. “It has been a tough year and the economy has not yet turned around.”

United Way collects money and redistributes it to more than 300 health, education, youth and other service agencies, including 14 local chapters of the American Red Cross.
