Gold Medalist to Be Guest at Fund-Raiser
NEWPORT BEACH — Olympic gold medalist Oscar De La Hoya will be the honored guest at a five-kilometer run Sunday to raise funds for cancer research and local breast cancer detection programs.
The “Race for the Cure” is organized by the Orange County chapter of the Dallas-based Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, a private funder of breast cancer research.
Cheryl Mundt, a spokeswoman for the organizers, said De La Hoya volunteered his support for the race. He dedicated his medal to the memory of his mother, who died from breast cancer two years ago.
Organizers hope to raise $150,000, Mundt said.
