REAL ESTATE
Garage-Size Homes: Made of straw, steel or wood, the tract homes in the future for most Orange County residents will be smaller, and their neighbors will be closer than ever before, builders say.
How small? There are already 520-square-foot condos on the market--that’s slightly larger than a standard two-car garage. But most planners think 1,200 to 2,000 square feet of floor space and 10 to 15 homes per acre will be optimum for affordable family dwellings.
By contrast, the average detached home built in Orange County in 1989, at the peak of the opulent era, had 2,700 square feet of space and just five or six neighbors per acre.
