Rabbi Bernie King and his wife, Barbara King, of Shir Ha-Ma’alot Harbor Reform Temple in Newport Beach have been selected as Humanitarians of the Year by the Orange County chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. They will be honored at a dinner Thursday at The Hyatt Newporter in Newport Beach.
Rabbi King was founding president of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council and was a founding member of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. The Kings and the congregation began the Adopt-A-School program last year so that needy students would have medical care, tutoring, music lessons, family assistance or other services.
Barbara King has been involved in many outreach programs for 18 years. She also founded the Adopt-a-Family Project and the Neighborhood Sewing Project in Huntington Beach. The Sewing Project set up a sewing facility for families where they could sew their own clothes.
