New Wave: Surf’s up, and so is business at Becker Surfboards. The company recently opened a store on Pacific Highway in Corona del Mar.
The chain is named after Phil Becker, who began shaping surfboards in 1958. The first Becker location opened in 1980 in Hermosa Beach. The chain also has stores in Mission Viejo and Malibu.
“We’ve maintained a focus as a destination store, choosing locations that are away from malls and that provide lots of convenient parking,” co-owner Dave Hollander said. “Corona del Mar is an overlooked jewel.”
The new store will feature Becker’s signature surfboards as well as in-line skates and skating apparel, plus a selection of clothing.
“We’ve built a niche with two age groups of women: ages 16 to 25 and ages 24 to 45,” said Becker’s buyer Carol Nielson. “They know they can find unique things here that won’t be in department stores.”
