SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It’s Tony Gleaton week in Santa Barbara.

The Los Angeles-based photographer’s extensive collection, titled “Beyond the Middle Passage: Africa’s Legacy in Mexico, Central America and South America,” is being shown in three parts at four different locations throughout the city.

Santa Barbara’s Museum of Art is displaying Gleaton’s photos from Central America, UC Santa Barbara’s Art Museum is showing the South America portion, and the UCSB Center for Black Studies and Santa Barbara’s La Casa de La Raza are exhibiting Gleaton’s work from Mexico.

Gleaton began his project during a trip to western Mexico in 1986. Over the next five years, he traveled to five villages, documenting the daily lives in the black communities of the area. From 1988 to 1992, Gleaton moved on to Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama. Through his work, Gleaton examines how looking at race is dependent on location and time.
