Westside : MISSING GUN
Thefts are not uncommon in Santa Monica, but rarely is the victim the chief of police.
A 9-millimeter handgun owned by Santa Monica Police Chief James T. Butts was stolen out of the trunk of his unmarked city car this week, police said.
The gun, a Smith & Wesson, was taken from the car’s locked trunk when a police cadet took the car through a carwash Monday. About $30 in cash and traveler’s checks were also stolen. The traveler’s checks were recovered from a garbage dumpster at the carwash, said police spokesman Lt. Bill Brucker.
