Obituaries : Edward Lowe; Inventor of Kitty Litter
SARASOTA, Fla. — Edward Lowe, an inventor who created Kitty Litter nearly 50 years ago as a favor to a family friend, has died.
Lowe, 75, who had homes in Arcadia, Fla., and Cassopolis, Mich., died Wednesday in a Sarasota hospital. The cause of death was not immediately available.
In 1947, Lowe created the clay-based cat box filler he called Kitty Litter. He later produced Tidy Cat and appeared in print and TV advertisements for his products.
In 1985, Lowe started the Edward Lowe Foundation to support entrepreneurs and the free enterprise system. The foundation sponsors programs, informational services and research tools for small business owners.
Lowe last year published “Hail Entrepreneur!,” a guide to small-business survival skills. Earlier, he wrote “The Man Who Discovered the Golden Cat,” an autobiography.
Lowe is survived by his wife, three stepchildren, a son and three daughters from his first marriage.
