Karros Is Hurting; Radinsky Impressive

First baseman Eric Karros was relieved Monday to learn that he has only tendinitis and not a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder, but still does not know whether he will be playing opening day.

Karros, who underwent an MRI test, was told to refrain from hitting or playing again until Thursday, when he will test the shoulder in a workout at Dodger Stadium.

“I didn’t sleep too well last night,” Karros said. “I was concerned something was really wrong. Hopefully, the inflammation will go away in a couple of days. . . .

“This is not where I want to be at this juncture of spring training with only 10 major league at-bats under my belt.”

It took all of one inning for Manager Tom Lasorda to become convinced that left-handed reliever Scott Radinsky belongs on the opening-day roster.

Radinsky, pitching in a game for the first time this spring, had a 1-2-3 inning against the New York Mets in the Dodgers’ 10-6 victory, striking out two.

“That’s all I wanted to see,” Lasorda said. “He looked very impressive.”

Ramon Martinez was named the opening-day starter. He will be followed in the rotation by Ismael Valdes, Hideo Nomo, probably Pedro Astacio, and Tom Candiotti.

Nomo will start the home opener April 8 against the Atlanta Braves, which is a sellout.

In the Freeway Series against the Angels, Nomo will pitch Friday night at Anaheim Stadium, followed by Astacio and Chan Ho Park on Saturday, then Candiotti on Sunday.

Pitchers Darren Dreifort and Rick Gorecki were put on the 15-day disabled list and will remain behind in the Dodgers’ extended spring-training camp. . . . Left fielder Billy Ashley, still hoping to at least platoon in left field, hit a home run off Pete Harnisch in his first at-bat in eight days. . . . Left-handed reliever Billy Brewer, who has been out a week because of tendinitis, pitched a scoreless inning. . . . The Dodgers hit six home runs, two by right fielder Raul Mondesi. . . . The Dodgers have decided to keep Delino DeShields batting leadoff with Brett Butler second.
