SBC May Relocate 1,200 Jobs to San Antonio
SBC Communications Inc., the nation’s largest regional Bell operating company, may relocate 800 to 1,200 corporate jobs to San Antonio as a result of its merger with San Francisco-based Pacific Telesis Group, a Texas paper reported. The impact on California jobs was not immediately clear. SBC executives would not confirm the number of people involved in the relocation, although it will be sizable, said Horace Wilkins, the company’s regional president for south Texas. The moves are resulting from SBC’s $16.5-billion merger in April with PacTel, parent of Pacific Bell. SBC will maintain four headquarters offices in California overseeing international long-distance and Internet services, but most of the company’s high-level decision-making will come from San Antonio. San Antonio-based SBC is the parent company for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co.
